About Dragonne

CiriOneYear-13_edited.jpg

Whats in a name?

A dragonne is a fantasy creature who combines the characteristics of both lions and dragons. Lowchen means "little lion dog" and as someone who has immersed themselves in gaming culture, fantasy books, and other nerdy ventures her entire life - I wanted to blend my passions together through my kennel name. As I watch my little lion dogs fly around as they zoom and play, they certainly remind me of little dragons! Hence "Dragonne" was born.

Our Philosophies

Lowchen have been bred for centuries as companion dogs and I believe that their temperaments should reflect this. They should be easy and simple to live with and fun to take out - intelligent, loving, happy, outgoing, and trainable - packaged with a heavy dose of humor. Thus, temperament is of upmost and primary importance to me. I believe the perfect companion is healthy as well so my dogs are health tested to OFA/breed club standards. This includes CAER eye exam every two years starting at 1 yr old, patella, and hips. The results of this information is publicly available on each dog's page.

I also am an enormous believer in the benefits of a puppy raising program - followed completely and thoroughly. We will follow the Avidog and Puppy Culture programs week by week, with videos of progress for puppy owners.

Our Breeding Goals

  • The correct temperament "alert, intelligent, and affectionate with the overall qualities of a loving companion dog. It has a lively, outgoing, and inquisitive personality"

    • We value those who are stable and able to coexist with all other dogs and people in their lives

    • We prefer dogs who have an "off switch" who are willing to work/play whenever the owner is up for it. We do not enjoy dogs who are hyperactive, anxious, nuisance barkers, or can't settle.

  • The correct size "mature dogs and bitches are between 11 to 13 inches at the withers. Height may vary 1 inch above or below this ideal."

    • Height varies greatly in the breed but we believe lowchen should be able to comfortably lay on a small lap, be held in one arm, and travel with an owner on an airplane under the seat. Thus we aim to produce dogs of appropriate size. All artwork of the breed over centuries have shown extremely small lapdogs - we need to keep them this way.

    • Dwarfism has been found in the breed and thus some dogs are the correct size only because of this - we are keeping a close eye on the effects of the genes. Both of our dogs are negative for both IVDD/CDDY and CPDA forms of dwarfism.

  • Structural Soundness and Health

    • We aim to breed dogs who are structurally and physically sound for the majority of their lifespans
